How to Make Fall Snack Mix
- For the dry mixture, in a large bowl, combine peanuts, cashews, white cheddar Cheez-Its, Cheez-Its and Reese’s Pieces. Mix until evenly dispersed.
- In separate microwave safe bowls, microwave vanilla candy coating and milk chocolate candy coating per package directions until melted and smooth.
- Dip is peanut butter cracker sandwich, peanut butter filled pretzel and pretzel thin in the candy coating, half in the vanilla and half in the milk chocolate. You can submerge them fully or cover them half way in the coating. Remove excess coating, and place on wax paper.
- Take leftover vanilla melted candy coating and mix with food colorings in separate bowls to desired color shades. Pour each color in their own Ziploc bag. Working with one at a time, snip the corner with scissors and drizzle the coating in lines along each dipped peanut butter cracker sandwich, peanut butter filled pretzel, and pretzel thin. Repeat with the second color, criss- crossing colors. Before the drizzle hardens, sprinkle with desired amount of sprinkles.
- Once the coated items harden, pull from wax paper and break off any excess coating.
- Combine the dry mixture and candy coated items. Serve in a large bowl or in individual containers/bags as gifts.
Expert Tips and Variations
- The possibilities of other ingredients to include in this mix are endless. Here are a few other fantastic fall items you could include:
- Candy Corn
- Mellowcrème Pumpkins
- Homemade Popcorn
- Caramel Corn
- Regular or Peanut M&Ms
- Mini Marshallows
- Dried Cranberries or Raisins
- Granola Clusters
- Chocolate Covered Nuts
- Goldfish
- You can make this same mix for other holidays or special occasions and simply switch up the coloring of the candy coating, sprinkles, and candy you choose to add.
- You can substitute regular chocolate for the candy melts. Be sure to add a 1 tablespoon coconut oil to the chocolate as you melt it in the microwave or over a double boiler on the stovetop. This helps the chocolate to set when it cools.
Storage
This mixture can be stored at room-temperature in an airtight container up to 3-4 weeks.
There are lots of fun options for packaging this mixture for gifts and personal touches like handwritten note, recipe cards, gift tag, and a fun ribbon can add an extra layer of thoughtfulness.
- Mason Jars: Fill clean and dry mason jars with your mix. Seal tightly and tie a ribbon around the lid. You can also attach a small gift tag or label with the mix's name.
- Decorative Tins: Use decorative tins or cookie tins to pack your mix. Line the inside with parchment paper, add the mix, and cover it with another layer of parchment paper before closing the tin. Decorate the outside with ribbons, bows, or seasonal stickers for a festive touch.
- Cellophane Bags: Fill clear cellophane bags with the mix, tie with colorful ribbons or twine, and add a decorative gift tag. You can also seal the bags with personalized stickers for an added personal touch.
- Holiday-Themed Containers: Choose containers in holiday themes, such as leaves, pumpkins, or ghosts. Fill with the mix and adorn with holiday-themed ribbons, ornaments, or stickers.
- Mini Buckets or Pails: Small metal buckets or pails make unique and reusable packaging. Line the bottom with tissue paper, fill with the mix, and cover the top with a piece of cellophane or a lid. Tie a ribbon around the handle and attach a gift tag.
- Gift Boxes: Choose sturdy gift boxes in various sizes. Line the bottom with tissue paper or parchment paper, then add your mix. Close the box and decorate it with ribbons, bows, or even dried flowers or pinecones for a rustic touch.
- DIY Paper Cones: Create paper cones out of decorative paper or parchment paper. Fill the cones with the mix and secure them with a piece of tape or a sticker. Tie the open end with a ribbon or twine, and attach a small gift tag.
Frequently Asked Questions
Be mindful of adding ingredients with high moisture content directly into the mix, especially if you're planning to store it for a while. Refrigeration can introduce moisture, making your mix go stale faster. Keep it at room temperature in a cool, dry place for the best results.
Make sure your candy-coated items have fully cooled and hardened before removing from the wax paper and placing in the dry mixture.
This mixture can be stored at room-temperature in an airtight container up to 3-4 weeks.
Vanilla Candy Coating also known as almond bark or confectionery coating, is made from sugar, partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil, whey powder, calcium carbonate, natural and artificial flavor, and artificial colors. It does not contain cocoa solids, which are found in real chocolate.
White Chocolate: White chocolate is made from cocoa butter, sugar, and milk solids. It contains cocoa butter, which gives it a true chocolate flavor. By definition, real white chocolate must contain at least 20% cocoa butter and 14% milk solids.
Yes, you can substitute white and milk chocolate for candy coating. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when making this substitution:
Melting Point and Texture: White and milk chocolate has a lower melting point than candy coating. When melting white chocolate, use low heat and stir continuously to prevent overheating and clumping. You might consider tempering to achieve right texture and avoid a soft, sticky finish.
Flavor: While it's delicious, it doesn’t match the exact taste of candy coating, which has a distinct sweet and vanilla flavor.
Adjusting Consistency: If the chocolate seems too thick, you can add a small amount of vegetable oil or shortening to thin it out.
Coloring: White chocolate can be more challenging to color than candy coating due to its creamy color. You may need specialized food coloring formulated for use with chocolate to achieve vibrant colors without affecting the texture of the chocolate.
