Expert Tips and Variations
- Use Ripe Avocados. Be sure to use soft, ripened avocados so the flavor and texture is as rich and smooth as possible. Trust me, don't rush the process! When you're choosing them at the store, pick them up and make sure they are just supple to the touch. This indicates they're perfect to eat.
- Make It Spicy. Add in chopped jalapenos for a little fiery kick!
- Add Fresh Fruit. Stir in some freshly diced mango or pineapple - the sweetness pairs nicely with the other guacamole ingredients.
- Add Extra Flavor and Texture. A dash of garlic powder or freshly grated garlic will give the guacamole an extra bite and flavor, while a sprinkle of cumin adds a deep, earthy flavor. Top with toasted pepitas for an added crunch!
Storage Instructions
- Refrigerate: Store any leftovers in an airtight container. Squeeze fresh lime juice over the guacamole and then place a piece plastic wrap directly on top of the guac so it's covered tightly. The acid from the lime and keeping it airtight will help it from turning brown.
- Avoid Freezing: Freezing can alter the texture of the avocado resulting in a mushy consistency. It's best to enjoy this fresh!
- Avocado Storage: Fresh avocados will keep on the counter and continue to ripen if you're ready to eat them in the next 2-3 days. If you'd like to enjoy them later, store them in the fridge with your other fruits and veggies to delay the ripening process. Remember, once you've cut open an avocado, it'll start to brown, so be sure to store any that are already sliced in an airtight container with piece of plastic wrap over its' surface in the fridge!
FAQs
A healthy squeeze of lime or citrus will help guacamole from turning brown, and if you're storing leftover guacamole or an open avocado, be sure to store it in an airtight container. Placing a layer of plastic wrap directly onto the cut surface will also help it from oxidizing and turning brown.
There are a few tips to speed up the ripening process (place in a paper bag on the counter, bake in a low temperature oven), but my best advice is to be patient and let them ripen naturally - it's worth the wait! Simply buy them in advance of when you'd like to use them, wait 2-3 days until they're soft to touch (but not mushy!) and you won't regret it.
So many ways! Add grated garlic to add a zesty bite! Or chopped fresh fruit for some added flavor. Freshly diced jalapeno will give the guacamole a little kick, too. Chopped tomatoes is always a refreshing addition. And one of my favorites is adding toasted pepitas on top for a little crunch and texture!
Look for avocados that are dark green to dark brown (and sometimes a dark eggplant color) with a bumpy surface. They will be soft to touch if you gently press on them, but they shouldn't be mushy or leave an indentation. If they're rock hard, they aren't ready yet! You can always bring these ones home and let them ripen on your counter for 2-3 days until they're soft and ready to use.
